Tiaki Bio

At Tiaki Bio we are committed to creating better products for a healthier world by bringing together people, processes and technology to transform animal by-products into high value inputs for biofuels and animal nutrition in the most sustainable way possible.

We harness innovation, aggregation and integration to improve outcomes for all stakeholders in the meat processing and animal by-product space. We cover the full value chain, from raw material capture and processing to the production of biofuel feedstock through to inputs for the global pet food and aquafeed markets.

Who we are

Tiaki Bio is comprised of a small group of highly aligned executives with a background in adding value to animal by-products through innovation in both technology and process. The group contains specialists from not just New Zealand but also North and South America.

These executives bring both experience and a network of global partners with the capability to deliver a step-change in by-product processing in New Zealand.

What we do

Tiaki Bio stands ready to deploy new and innovative technologies and processes to develop higher value products whilst using less energy and having a reduced environmental impact.

We do it differently and we do it better

Moving beyond conventional rendering, Tiaki Bio looks to minimise energy consumption and maximise the value of end products through new and innovative processing technologies. Working directly with buyers, products are custom-made to meet changing market demands and requirements around sustainability, traceability, and product quality.

Benefits come from partnership and co-location

There are clear economic benefits and environmental benefits when by-product processing is integrated with meat processing. The exchange of services such as steam, hot water recovery, nutrient recovery, can create a win-win outcome for all parties.

Getting to net carbon zero

As New Zealand moves towards carbon zero by 2050 the rendering industry has a key part to play to ensure our meat industry achieves net carbon neutrality.

In the 1970’s and 1980’s New Zealand led the world in the research and development of low temperature rendering systems, a response to higher energy prices after the oil crisis of the early 1970’s. But since then the sector has languished. Change has been slow. It is time for a step change.

From the utilisation of anaerobic digestors, biomass boilers and waste heat recovery and utilisation, Tiaki Bio stands ready to drastically reduce the dependence on fossil fuel for product transformation in New Zealand’s South Island.

Taiki Bio believes that it is its responsibility to make sure that by-product processing is more sustainable that it has been to date in New Zealand. The world faces some phenomenal challenges to meet growing food demand over the coming years and decades. We have to learn to do more with less.

The use of energy for by-product transformation is an inevitable part of the meat industry. But so much more can be done to reduce the sector’s carbon footprint. If New Zealand is to become a net zero carbon emitter by 2050 then the rendering industry needs to lead the way. Tiaki Bio is committed to being the leader, both in establishing goals, and meeting them.

Our goals for the next five years

Reduce water use in by-product processing by 30%

Reduce carbon intensity in by-product processing by 40%

Reduce methane production from dead livestock by 20%

THE CHALLENGE

The rendering industry is not a large user of water compared to meat processing or the dairy industry, but we believe we can still improve on current consumption levels.

THE CHALLENGE

At present almost all steam for processing of animal byproducts in the South Island of New Zealand is generated by coal. This must change if New Zealand is to achieve net carbon zero by 2050.

THE CHALLENGE

Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas. Currently, there are far too many dead livestock buried on the farm rather than going to a facility for processing and transformation into biofuel feedstcock

HOW

Tiaki Bio will used recovered water from the rendering process for plant and truck washdown. Control valves integrated into an automated system will regulate water use throughout the processing plants.

HOW

Tiaki Bio will utilize biomass capable boilers, manufactured in New Zealand, which will burn far less coal than is currently the case. Instead they will also burn biomass such as wood pellets, dewatered paunch grass, bio gas generated from food waste and even biomass recovered from used tyres.

HOW

Tiaki Bio will increase the collection of dead livestock in the South Island. This dead livestock will be converted into fat for biodiesel production and biomass for bio gas generation.
